RE: GRFF ideas

To check domain names you can use hostmonster.com

Nicki - I really like your ideas!

I'm thinking wednesday sounds like a good option - I'm available anytime after 1030am.

I sent an email to everyone, so if you can respond to that, then we can figure something out in terms of meeting time/place.

Meeting...

hey guys, for whatever reason the e-mail i sent back to everyone didn't get delivered.

as for the meeting time; i cant do monday (tomorrow) because i have a class, in which i have a presentation, from 4-7 and work before that.

wednesday however i can anytime before 6.

webpage design

so i've been thinkign more about our website.
although i think just a single image on the page is a cool idea, we gotta do something with more design elements in it. i've just done the reading in the text book for section two. check out pages 56 and 58 for design elements. i was looking at the collage one in the unity section (we could use the movie posters?) and at the proximity example (we could use events and write small blurbs about them). and i like the idea of page bleed (images goin right to the edge, pg 64) but also breaking up a white border looks really cool too (page 71). and finally, as if you're not going to read it for yourselves and figure this all out... page 71s bulletted list is essential for any designing, so i think we need to encorporate some if not all of those items.
i just think that if we don't have anything worth while to grade, we're not gonna do too hot. lemme know what you guys think.
ps i'm still thinking of URL names. what about hypens? like G-R-F-F.com? those are still easy to remember.
Nicki
I'm with Nicki on this one... what's the site to look up available domains?

We should all see what we can find, as the domain is probably the MOST key element of our campaign..

Ian.

gots to find a web name!

hi guys, dumb question. what was the website where we can check the availability of URls? i'm determined to find somthing that works before next class.

Hey, good to see we have some ideas generating. We can always combine various ideas such as going around to classes and handing out flyers. I definitely think we should try and get as many people as possible so including the theaters, laurier etc is good. For the handouts I think we need more than just an image and our URL we need to give people a reason to go to the URL. Think; if someone gave you a picture and a website would you go to not knowing anything about it? You need to intice people, whats in it for them? I thought advertising the discount for the movies through a discounted pass that you had to sign up for online covered that. I think we also need to look at using different media, maybe an ad in imprint or an ad through the tvs on campus like in the slc or sc hall. Its relatively easy to make a digital media ad. we could hang banners in the SLC.
Some other thoughts.. what will our website have on it, its not a replica of the GRFF site.

RE: GRFF design AR

Nice video tape design Ian!

And handing them out at the local theatres is perfect! Even Centre in the Square would be a great place to distribute them. As for Imprint, one of my good friends works there. I'm seeing her tonight so I'll see what she can hook us up with and let you guys know tomorrow.

Awesome work everyone :)

Ideas Cont'd

I think Ian's design is perfect. If we just throw the URL on somewhere on there, I think it will peak people's interest enough to visit. Even if they don't end up attending the festival, it's all hits to us right.

Also, I never thought of passing them out at Galaxy or Princess, but that is also a fantastic idea.

Does anyone have a hookup with Imprint? Maybe we could try and get these flyers thrown inside an Imprint in the next week or two.

Anyways, good start and good ideas guys.

Nice PS skill Ian, I like it.

Here's my GU ad.

Had some fun playing around with slogans and the use of "space" in the layout.

Ian.

I see some serious thinking has been going on here, and I like what you guys have come up with for our campaign.

I threw together a simple video tape design which could work for a leaflet-type distribution. We obviously still need to add the URL for our website, but it can easily be added later.

Let me know what you think.

Ian.

GRFF Idea Feedback.

Hi Guys,
I was definetly thinking on the same wavelength as Anton. You mentioned using mediums that display only a little bit of information to intice people to visit our site. I think it's essential for us to only give away a bit of our info because most of the people that visit our site will never have gone to or even heard of the event, so curiosity may be our main form of attack. You also said using UW as a means of distribution of flyers/posters etc. This is good but I think we can go further and encorporate more space (ie. Laurier, the street, bus stops..) Anywhere that people pass during the day could have something about our site. What about the Galaxy or Princess movie theatre?
I'm going to think of some more ideas and bring them to class. We've got some good starts, I'm excited.

GRFF Ideas

Hey,

I think bringing 3 ideas to the table for Thursday is a good idea. Here's a couple I have floating around my head:

1. I think an effective way of getting hits is to peak people's curiosity by not giving away too much information. I was thinking maybe little flyers shaped like VHS tapes with simply the website URL written on the back. We could spread these around campus, like in the Imprint stands, poster boards, cafe trays...everywhere.

2. Perhaps a more typical strategy. Ask your professors if you can have 1 or 2 mins before lecture to have a word with the class. Let them know about the festival, what it has to offer, then write our URL on the board and encourage them to visit even if they are vaguely interested. Try to emphasize the fact that our website is the best/only way to get information on tickets.

RE: GRFF ideas - AR

The discount coupons sound like a good idea.

How about if we each try and come up with about 3 ideas so we can share and discuss them Thursday? 15 ideas should give us a nice base to start.

LMK how that sounds

Wow your ads look great! Have any ideas about the campaign come across over the weekend? I definately think we are going to need something besides the sight to draw people in. I was thinking we should do something local withing the Laurier/ Waterloo vacinity. All I can think of at the moment is the handout coupons for deiscount movie passes and say you have to purchase at the website, our site gives more info on the discount then you send them to the actual site. Just a thought, feel free to comment

AR GU ad

Here is my Gu ad. I attempted to incorporate the idea of sports into the letters to emphasize the word "Goal". I used a non-centred layout and followed the natural reading flow for English by drawing the reader's eye from the top left corner down to the bottom right.

Anthony's GU Crop Attempt

Here is literally my first attempt at using Photoshop in general. I have a new found respect for anyone who is really good with the program and is able to make elaborate and beautiful pieces of art with it because I had enough trouble simply trying to crop this simple image.

Overall, I'm happy with my first attempt. I tried to use a very straight forward, strictly business style approach to the ad. The simple black background with the red text as well as the slogan itself reflect this approach.

Michelle

I went for promoting the various flavour options of GU and I stole the idea of refuelling. Its a good concept for energy drinks. I couldn't do too much, I was working in paint...lol

So what do you guys think about this campaign stuff. I think we have to think of something in addition to the website. We need to reach out to the people then get them to go on our site. I thought the intiatives for students were good or the volunteer opportunities. I know we have a film studies department at our school. Maybe we could promote something like "discounted movies" and hand out coupon type flyers that say you have to go to the site to get them.
